Description
Basically I made this to circulate some ideas to my friend Kelsey for her AU of her fic, Tale of Hema, about the fifth Avatar. So nothing's really set in stone...pun not intended?
In this au, gem beings are still like how they are in Steven Universe but also a little different. Humanoid aliens by nature, light mass like gems, can regenerate if poofed/fatally wounded, shapeshift, and can fuse. What makes them different I guess would be how humanoid they look, well, some do, some don't perhaps. Some gems identify as masculine, others as feminine, either way, they are sexless beings as sex and gender are two different constructs.
The "Avatar Gems" like the "Crystal gems" consist of the first four avatars of the Tale of Hema, Wan, TeiSoo, Nilak, and Sudhir, but I think those would be their human/Earth names they adopt the more they spent on Earth, studying and protecting it.
Wan (Almandine) is the Rose Quartz of the group, the leader, with many loyal followers/armies, which have now been reduced to this current team.
TeiSoo [Pearl] (my oc as the second avatar in the cycle of ATLA/LOK/TOH) is a Pearl like figure, the most loyal follower and admirer of Wan/Almandine
Sudhir, would be like Amethyst, only I'm not quite sure what his gem would be at the moment. I'm leaning along the lines of Jadeite, Tourmaline, or Emerald.
Nilak (my other oc, third avatar in context of ATLA/LOK/TOH) would be the Garnet figure, as Blue Agate. I'm not sure whether or not she'd be a fusion herself, but even if she wasn't, I think the gem(s) would be on her hands, like Garnet.
Since I headcanon, and I'm pretty sure it's the case, that the temple fusion of SU is the crystal gems with Rose fused, so I think the equivalent of a temple fusion with these four would look like my fusion of Wan and my design of humanoid!Spirit Raava, but with extra arms. Gem name? ehh, as of now, maayybe Diamond, like the temple fusion according to the gemsona maker, the colors make sense anyway. If it had an Earth name too, it would be Raava.
The Homeworld society ran by Diamonds would be similar to the four nations. Fire benders of ATLA/LOK would be equivalent to Quartzes, being soldiers and skilled fighters; Earth benders would be equivalent to gems who are also trained to fight, but also have technical capabilities and may also be body guards, Waterbenders would be equivalent to gems who travel abroad to other worlds to gather information for their factions, gather new ideas for technology, maybe even medical training or technical training; and airbenders would be like Pearls, servants/butlers/help or personal assistants.
Almandines aren't quartzes though, but types of Garnets, but from what I've read about them reminded me alot of Rose Quartz's character and even Wan, so it fit. He would still be from the faction that's equivalent to fire benders though.
Not everything is going to be totally exact to the SU world/canon, but has a big influence as that's what the AU is based on.
The Avatar Gems are kind of like how Lapis can manipulate water or the planet's oceans, except they can manipulate all four elements not just water. They and most (if not all) gems in this au have the ability to fuse and the fusions would take on its own identity like the fusions in SU. Since the gems are already mostly humanoid by nature, the fusions depending on stability may either also look normal or look monstrous and more...alien.
Not sure if the timeline or setting of Earth is reminiscent of the Avatar verse but more modern like ours (say the Avatar after Korra) or be like the Steven Universe world where it's just a modern day setting, and if it also includes other characters of the Avatar franchise from ATLA or LOK, or just OCs of Tale of Hema and The Journey of Wan.
Hema would be like Steven
Kara (my oc for The Journey of Wan) would be like Greg
Azalea would be Kara's former manager, like Marty to Greg
Cirrus would be like Connie
While Hema is actually LuvAdventure's OC as the fifth avatar, in this AU, she is the half gem/human daughter of Wan and Kara from TJOW, Kara being my oc and Avatar Wan from LOK. I still try to wrap my mind around how the roles would be reversed in the way that masculine!Rose would give up his form when Fem!Greg gave birth? I get how the biology and conception would work though. In this case, Almandine gives up his form and gem to Hema when she's born, but like Rose, the mindsets are similar, for their children to bridge their kinds.
I would've used the gemsona maker, but there didn't seem to be as much variety with outfits, gem types, and heck even the preferred "gender" identity to the beings.

Woah this is a really good visual idea of how this AU would work! As for Wan giving up his form for Hema, maybe it could be that Nilak (well whether she is a fusion in this AU composed of Nita and Denahi) sees from the future with her future vision that his newborn daughter will be born without a life force leaving Wan with a decision if Hema lives or dies. As ultimately, he makes his choice to sacrifice his life force giving his daughter the gift of life. Could that maybe work?
